Best Ski Jacket
How do I choose the best ski jacket?
When choosing the right ski jacket, there are a number of factors that you should take into account. We have listed these for you below:
1. Opt for good insulation: Choose a ski jacket with a good lining. The heat that your body releases while skiing therefore stays in the jacket and keeps your body at the right temperature.
2. Sufficient freedom of movement:You can test whether the jacket offers sufficient freedom of movement by bending your arms in the same way that you do when skiing. Bend your arms in, cross them over, and make some exaggerated movements. In addition, the following applies: the lighter the jacket, the higher the comfort and the better the freedom.
3. High breathability level: Skiing and snowboarding are intensive sports, so you are bound to sweat a lot. It is therefore important that your ski jacket offers a high level of breathability. If a ski jacket does not breathe properly, perspiration cools down on your body, which in turn decreases your body temperature.
4. Good fit: It might sound obvious, but make sure that your ski jacket has a comfortable fit. The ski jacket must not be too tight, because that will cause you trouble while moving. A ski jacket that is too large often does not work well for you either, because the superfluous fabric gets in the way.
Handy extra features
Sealed seams
To ensure that your ski jacket is properly waterproof, it is also important to pay attention when purchasing whether the ski jacket has sealed seams. Seams and zips are vulnerable places because the water can easily pass through them. Ski jackets with sealed seams are completely waterproof and therefore optimally protect you against wetness and snow.
Snow catcher
Snow catchers, as the name suggests, prevent snow from getting into your jacket. Snow catchers are a kind of 'flaps' that are attached to the bottom of your jacket and that you can close tightly around your body. This prevents snow from falling between your jacket and body if you fall.
Hood
Although you might not often need a hood while skiing or snowboarding, we recommend that you choose a ski jacket with a hood. Especially on days when there is a lot of snow, a hood can really come in handy. Do you want to have the choice of a hood? Then choose a ski jacket with a detachable hood.
Waterproof ski jackets
When is a ski jacket waterproof?
It is very important that your ski jacket is waterproof. A waterproof jacket keeps you nice and dry, even during most heavy snowfalls. Waterproof means that no water can penetrate the material. Jackets with a water column from 1,000 mm are generally considered waterproof, but with a ski jacket, it is advisable to choose a jacket with a water column of at least 5,000 mm. Whether or not a jacket is waterproof is not only dependent on the fabric, you also need to make sure that your ski jacket has sealed or taped seams, and that it has a waterproof zip or a covered zip (with storm flap).
